OpenFn and OpenHIE Standards

OpenFn can securely connect any application and provides features for building, managing and running workflows at scale, enabling interoperability and helping organizations digitize and automate their work.

In the OpenHIE standard architecture, OpenFn is an OpenHIE-compliant workflow engine used to (1) automate complex business processes that cut across digital systems (including OpenHIE components and point of care systems), and to (2) handle data mapping and transformation. See OpenFn docs to learn more.

OpenFn can be deployed anywhere and provides robust, flexible configuration options to ensure compliance with data privacy and security policies. Additionally, OpenFn promotes open standards and open access through open-source software, documentation, and features, while also addressing privacy and security concerns.

OpenFn in OpenHIE & the Digital Health Community

OpenFn is committed to contributing its expertise and resources to the OpenHIE initiative, helping to advance the goal of interoperable health information systems that improve health outcomes globally. OpenFn would contribute a diverse set of skillsets to the OpenHIE initiative, in the key area of Data Integration and Interoperability, with expertise in creating seamless data integration solutions that enable efficient data exchange between health information systems and strong capabilities in adhering to global standards such as HL7 FHIR and OpenHIE standards in the design process to ensure interoperability and compliance.

OpenFn aims to play a collaborative partner role in the OpenHIE community to help drive the adoption of interoperable health information systems across various regions and healthcare settings as well as encouraging members of the community to develop and implement best practices for data integration and workflow automation. The OpenFn team is also able to provide training and support to help OpenHIE members leverage our platform to its full potential. Our active participation as an OpenHIE partner would see OpenFn taking part in OpenHIE discussions and working groups to share insights and collaborate on key initiatives and to help shape the direction of OpenHIE standards and practices.

OpenFn has made significant contributions to the digital health community by developing and maintaining its platform as a “Digital Public Good” and a “Global Good for Health”, freely accessible to organizations worldwide. This includes providing open-source adaptors and connectors for widely used digital health tools like CommCare, DHIS2, OpenMRS, and many more, which support the integration of health data systems

At the country level, OpenFn collaborates with governmental and non-governmental organizations to implement and scale digital health solutions tailored to the specific needs of national health systems, enhancing health outcomes. OpenFn has also provided extensive consulting support to GovStack, serving on the technical committee, the architecture committee, the workflow engine building block working group, and the information meditator building block. In this role at GovStack, OpenFn served as a liaison with key personnel at OpenHIE to ensure high-level alignment between the GovStack specifications and the OpenHIE specification. In addition to the contributions mentioned above (notably participation in OpenHIE calls and OpenHIE advocacy within GovStack), OpenFn’s leadership have collaborated with key staff at Regenstrief Institute in support of the OpenHIE initiative.
